# Jain Agamas: Canonical Texts and the Teachings of Mahavira

The Jain Agamas preserve the teachings of the Tirthankaras, particularly Mahavira (24th and last Tirthankara).

## Original Canon
Originally transmitted orally. The tradition holds 12 Angas (limbs) contained Mahavira's direct sermons, plus 14 Purvas (ancient texts) containing the most profound knowledge. Much was gradually lost due to famines, lack of scholars, and challenges of oral transmission.

## The Canon Dispute

### Shvetambara Position
Their extant Agamas represent the closest available version of original teachings. Canon codified at two councils: Pataliputra (c. 4th century BCE) and Valabhi (5th-6th century CE), when remaining oral traditions were finally written down. Canon comprises 45 texts: Angas, Upangas (auxiliary), Chedasutras (monastic discipline), Mulasutras (basic texts).

### Digambara Position
All original canonical texts were completely lost in early centuries CE. Shvetambara Agamas are not authentic. Instead, Digambaras rely on later philosophical works by prominent acharyas.

## Key Texts

### Acharanga Sutra
Details conduct of ascetics and life of Mahavira. The oldest surviving Jain text, containing powerful passages on ahimsa and ascetic practice.

### Tattvartha Sutra
By Umaswati (c. 2nd-5th century CE), revered by both sects. Systematically summarizes fundamental tenets: cosmology, epistemology, ethics, and path to liberation. The most comprehensive universally accepted Jain text.

### Kalpa Sutra
Mahavira's biography and monastic rules.

## Oral Transmission
Centuries of oral transmission before written codification. The challenges of memory, famine, and community disruption led to inevitable losses but also to a rich oral interpretive tradition.

## Unity Despite Dispute
Both sects share core philosophical principles — ahimsa, karma theory, path to moksha — demonstrating fundamental unity in spiritual aspirations despite scriptural divergence.
